Thermae Sylla is almost 120 years old! Considered the first modern hotel in Aidipsos, the hotel and spa complex was built on the most beautiful spot of the town, opening its doors in 1896. It was designed by the architect Errikos Tobazis, a nobleman from the region, with all the latest comforts in mind. Tobazis brought stone bricks from nearby parts of Northern Evia to build the property, although the design was considered quite European.

While the area was known for its healing springs, it did not have 'modern' hotels to cater to the visitors who came from far and wide. The original building boasted 80 rooms at the time, with high quality furnishings such as electric bells and quality bedding in all the rooms. Its basement featured marble tubs with thermal water so that guests could enjoy the benefits of its healing powers. Interestingly but not surprisingly, Roman ruins came to light during the building and excavation phase, attesting to Roman spa facilities from centuries ago. The ruins have been put under the protection of Thermae Sylla and are now visible on the premises.

In a few years since its establishment, the property quickly became popular with the upper class who sought relaxation and recovery. Queen Olga, wife of King George I of Greece, stayed there for a short period of time in 1907, beginning a strong tradition of personalities and noblemen who visited in successive decades. The queen had fallen in love with the area and had even commissioned Bavarian experts to develop the area. In decades to come, the property was frequented by the likes of Winston Churchill, Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas and many others.

Today it is still a favorite of personalities, including the Russian astronaut Sergey Revin, who seek advanced treatments like mud balneotherapy, hydromassage and detoxification treatments. After 12 decades, today Thermae Sylla has combined the latest technologies and medical knowhow with the powers of its thermal waters, proudly maintaining its position as one of the world's leading spas.
